From our kitchen to yours

Our mission is to bring the authentic flavours of Malay cuisine to a wider market. Every product you can find on our website is based on family recipes that have been passed down through the generations, tried by friends and loved by family.

This respect for humble family recipes is the root of what we do. We believe that you shouldn't need to break the bank, spend hours in the kitchen or jump through hoops to experience real flavour, and so Pastes and Sauces was launched with simplicity in mind – From the blends of authentic spices that make up our pastes to the recipes you can find on our blog.

The Flavours of Malay cuisine

Malay food originates from Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei and Singapore.

While the cuisine has its roots in the culture and traditions of the Malay people, influences can be felt from China, India and indigenous groups too. Indian traders, for example, brought spices and introduced dishes like curries, while Chinese immigrants brought with them ingredients like noodles and soy-based sauces.

This all serves to make Southeast Asia a uniquely vibrant part of the world for foodies and flavour enthusiasts, thanks to the overlapping dynamism of Malaysian, Indonesian, Thai and Singaporean cuisine.

Flavourful Roots

Some Malaysian dishes have their roots in Indonesian dishes while Singapore Malay recipes take inspiration from Malaysia, with practically every region, province or city has its own take on classic dishes like rendang, nasi lemak and satay.

The abundance of tropical fruits, seafood, rice and coconut are the primary ingredients of the region, while lemongrass, galangal, turmeric and chilli make up the staple spices. These all combine to create distinctively aromatic flavours that can't be found anywhere else.
